12 buying signals worth checking before outreach

A focused conversation. No obligation.

A buying signal can offer context, but it does not prove that a company wants your product. Use it as a reason to research the account and ask whether there is a relevant problem to discuss.

Changes in the business

Useful prompts can include a funding announcement, expansion into a new market, a newly appointed leader, a relevant job opening, an acquisition or a public strategic initiative. Check the date, the source and the connection to your product. An event with no connection to your use case is just an event.

Interest in your product

First-party context can include a demo request, a trial signup, a return to a stalled conversation, a question at an event, a requested resource or a recurring product question. These six prompts, alongside the business changes above, give you twelve starting points to examine. Use only information your team is entitled to process.

Confirm the account fit

Check the company size, market, use case and relevant role against your target criteria. A signal at the wrong account should not automatically trigger an outreach sequence. Be particularly careful about assuming that a website visit identifies a person or means purchase intent.

Connect the context to a useful question

Describe a problem you can help with and ask whether it is relevant. Do not claim to know private priorities or imply that you have monitored an individual. The message should make sense even when the buyer does not recognize the signal that prompted your research.

Keep a record of what you learned

Track which signals led to meaningful replies and which were too weak or too broad. Refine the signal definition over time. Good research helps your team choose where to spend attention; it does not remove the need to qualify the conversation.
